Please come help us as Palm Harbor Museum is assisted by Keep Pinellas Beautiful in our next Garden Care Day on Saturday, October 7 from 8 AM to 11 AM. Even an hour of your time helps maintain our gardens—every weed removed improves the look and well being of our native plants. Wear closed toe shoes, hat and sunscreen. Bring your water bottle and a favorite gardening tool with your name marked on masking tape (hand trowel, shovel, or hoe). Keep Pinellas Beautiful will supply tools, gloves. sunscreen, bug repellant and first aid kit. Use our picnic tables to rest and relax as needed, and we'll supply refreshments of fruit, snack bars, cookies, ice and water cooler. This history—ignored for more than a century—has come to light and been reported with increasing frequency in the last several years by 60 Minutes, NPR, Newsweek, the Tampa Bay Times, Tampa Bay and other local news broadcasts in our region, statewide, and nationally. Rachael will discuss how these cemeteries were “erased,” how communities, historians, journalists, and archaeologists are re-discovering them, the ongoing nature of this work, recent findings, and efforts to identify the buried and the processes to restore or honor these historic cemeteries. An archaeologist for over 10 years, Rachael is passionate about communicating archaeology and building partnerships to promote archaeological interpretation of the past to benefit the present. She is the Regional Director for the West Central region of the Florida Public Archaeology Network, conducting public archaeology and outreach. She earned her M.A. from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in 2015 and is certified as a member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA). She is also an American Academy for Underwater Sciences (AAUS) diver, allowing her to assist with underwater research around the state. There is no charge to attend and all ages are welcome. Donations are gratefeully accepted. There is plenty of free parking at Palm Harbor Library, which is wheelchair accessible and requires no steps to enter. Disabled parking spaces by front entrance. Open seating for this event. We recommend you arrive early, especially for seats closer to the front—or email palmharbormuseum@outlook.com to request that we hold front seats for you.
